How Green Is FCC? And Did it work?

On the week of March 24 2008, Fresno City College decided to contribute to the environment once again. The college is no stranger the environmental cause that’s now spreading around the world.

The Associated Student Government and the Rampage joined forces for the “Go Green” campaign here on campus, the edition contained many environmental based articles.

The real question is: did green week work? Or was it just another week here at Fresno City, or is it an everlasting movement that will change the face of the college as we know it? Let’s take an inside look on campus to see what students had to say and from my personal observations in regards to how green FCC is and if the event really worked.

The ASG hosted many events that were meant to help FCC students and faculty to get more involved in maintaining the appearance of the campus and gain to insight on the crucial state of our planets future

The clubs promoted recycling by having recycle bins and answering questions about the environment, selling t-shirts and so on. There were many events held on campus such events consisted of documentaries, live entertainment, information booths and many facts about environmental awareness around the campus

As I walked through the campus on Friday just as green week was coming to an end I had strong feelings of confusion and frustration. I asked myself: do the students even care about their environment? Do they care about their institute of education?

I was beside myself. I started to deeply ponder the reason behind the neglect of our campus’s cleanliness and appearance. I guess I never thought about it before green week, but this was not the first time I had noticed the campus in this state.

In fact there had been many occasions I had witnessed the massacre of city college.

As I made my way from the Rampage office to the library I looked around and what I saw were knocked down signs, torn banners and remnants of earlier breakfast and lunch consumptions all over the college mall.

So to clear up my concerns in regards to this situation I decided to come up with a survey to better understand the status of the students’ position and awareness of the waste on campus.

Michael Low, a business major at FCC, responded back to all of my survey questions pertaining to green week with some harsh criticisms. “First off, it seems as if no one cares about the school and it’s true. The custodians labor day and night for nothing, because the next day it’s still going to look the way it did the day before-awful.

Low went on to say, “Green week meant very little if anything at all to students, due to the fact that it hasn’t changed anything that I see.”

There is substance to what Low said, and it is an assured fact that we as the student body and faculty need to contrive means of order here on campus so that we may be content with its cleanliness.

From a recent poll about the environment, Michael Reyes a student at FCC responded in a survey, “I thought the facts on the signs were very interesting, they informed people about the litter. I think we as the student body should pick up after ourselves so we can make it a more enjoyable experience here at school. I think green week had an affect on some students, it actually made me open my eyes and I will do what I can to help out.”

Many other students like Jose Perez disagreed with the state here on campus,

Perez said, “I didn’t think it worked, I don’t feel like people got the importance of the points that were trying to be made. I liked the fact that the recycle bins were brought out but as I look around the campus now I see only one or two.”

Perez went on to say “We all should pick up trash even if it’s one piece, we should take pride in our campus and I’d be willing to affix a group here on campus to better take care of the filth issue it is faced with.”

FCC custodian Jon Luna said “The campus looks a little cleaner, it is all about public awareness and I think everyone should pitch in. said Luna “I hope that green week has a long lasting influence on us all here at city college. I myself bought the green week t-shirt I was so proud.”
