The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) hosted its first Spikeball tournament on Monday, April 27, at Ratcliffe Stadium on the Fresno City College campus, gathering about 22 participants.
With a partner, students competed in teams for a cash prize of $100 per player. The event was launched with free food and drinks while Pastor John Drotos addressed his message to the participants before the Spikeball tournament.
Emma Connolly, a leader of the FCA at Fresno City College who is double majoring in kinesiology and biology, helped to organize and set up the event.
“We wanted to do some type of outreach event that would draw people into FCA and show what it’s about, but in a different kind of setting, that wasn’t a structured FCA huddle like we do on Mondays,” Connolly said.
Connolly explained the event was open to everyone to create a welcoming environment. The goal was to share a moment of community while sharing a message of faith.
“We wanted something more inviting for people who might not usually come, to encourage them to try it out, hear a sermon and get a taste of what FCA is about, and hopefully continue attending our gatherings on Monday nights,” Connolly said.
Organizing the event came with some challenges, having everything approved and getting all the equipment. Despite those adjustments, for Connolly the result and the atmosphere turned out as expected.
“The number of people who came was really encouraging,” Connolly said. “The atmosphere was super with a fun community, everybody was cheering for each other. It was obviously competitive, but in a friendly way, with a lot of jokes and good energy.”
