ASG Begins Work on Establishing Smoking Areas

The Associated Student Government of Fresno City College voted unanimously on Sept. 24 to begin work on establishing designated smoking areas on campus.

“It was a big thing because that has been debated for around three years,” said ASG Executive Vice President David Manyvanh. “We are finally the ones to get it all done.”

All the parking lots, except Parking Lot S which is next to the day care center, will be designated smoking areas, according to ASG President Edward James. The west lawn as well as the main fountain and the area by the Music and Theater Buildings will also be designated areas.

ASG has also added six new senators, Matt Shubin, Daniel Melchor, Anna Perez, Josh Davey, Nicholas Martinez and Blanca Ramirez.

Many of the established members of the student government say they are impressed by the new members.

“You usually have about one person that specializes in one thing,” said Legislative Vice President Melissa Lopez. “But these guys specialize in four things, and I am humbled to be able to be around them.”

James said he is pleased with the new ASG senators.

“We got a lot of new talent. They are young, enthusiastic and talented as hell.”

Student government representatives will also be holding tabling events by the main fountain area on Oct. 3.

Members of ASG will set up tables in different locations, depending on the day, in an attempt to answer student questions and concerns about different things that are happening around FCC.

The ASG members stated that they will continue to police themselves in the office to continue to  make sure that their professional image is maintained.

“There have been a lot of improvements in the office procedures from before,” James said.

The organization will continue working on its goals, set at the beginning of the semester, including completing and implementing the designated smoking areas and increasing communication with students and improving its presence on campus.

“The more manpower you have,” EVP  Manyvanh said, “the better your organization can function.”
