After the Fresno City College Rams extended their undefeated record with a win over the College of the Sequoias 60-17, the California Community College Athletic Association voted both FCC and Foothill College as the No.1 ranked teams in Northern California.
“We should have been No.1 after we beat San Francisco,” said Antonio Hartwell FCC’s sophomore defensive lineman.
Freshman offensive lineman A.J Savaii has no doubt in his mind that his team has been No. 1 and insists that those around him agree.
FCC Freshman Quarterback Bryan Moniz, put out his best performance as a Ram by completing 20 of 37 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns. “Everything fell into place,” said Moniz. “It worked out just as we practiced.”
One of the interesting plays of the game came when the Rams were up 47-17. Moniz tried to hit Arsenio Curry with a flare pass and Curry dropped the ball, then picked it up and ran 47 yards for a touchdown.
“It went over my head and hit the ground, “said Curry,” I just wanted to get the ball back.”
When he got his hand back on the ball, Curry avoided a defender and made his way into the end zone.
The Rams defense went into the game ranked second in the state. They lived up to their high standards by continuously pressuring Sequoias’ quarterback Arkelon Hall, chasing him out of the pocket and forcing him to hurry his throws.
“We went into the game ready for war,” said freshman defensive lineman Reggie Brown. “Our goal was to destroy their home coming game.”
The clobber fest by the Rams was the worst in the series since a 73-16 blowout in 2001. The beating also added to the Rams’ eight wins in the past nine meetings between the teams.
The nostalgia of being ranked No. 1 hasn’t made its way to the head of the Rams’ coach. Tony Caviglia made it clear that his team has a tough road ahead of them. “Any talk about being No.1 could go out the door if we lose any of the next three games,” she said.
Caviglia is looking forward to another Valley Conference win this Saturday as the Rams host the 6-1 Sierra Wolverines. Kickoff is 7:00pm at Ratcliff Stadium.
