Chewey Telesco lives for baseball

Chewey Telesco is one of three Rams to have hit a homerun so far this season. With 28 hits and 16 runs, Telesco is one of the leading performers this season.

During a pre-season interview, Rams’ coach Ron Scott predicted Telesco to be one of the players to look out for. With his current form, he is not letting his coach’s predictions down.

Telesco calls Scott a good coach from whose experience he is benefiting. “He’s got it figured out I think by now, after 23 years, he’s got it,” said Telesco.

“I like the system that they run out here, it’s good, a lot of coaching,” he added.

Telesco was introduced to baseball by his family. “My dad introduced me, playing with my older brother. He was already playing little league,” said Telesco.

It was also through his brother that he was given the nickname Chewey.

“My brother couldn’t say Matthew, he’d say Matt-chew, so then it became Chewey,” said Telesco.

Baseball has always been the first choice sport for Telesco. As a child he idolized Chipper Jones, third baseman for the Atlanta Braves. His all-time favorite player is Pete Rose. Telesco considers himself to be a hardcore San Francisco Giants fan.

Besides baseball, Telesco enjoys golf, but doesn’t get to play as often as he would like. Most of his time is dedicated to baseball.

“It’s my life,” he says. “Every day I’m on the field.” Telesco believes his teammates have the same dedication.

“Any of these guys will tell you their life is baseball at this point,” he said.

Telesco feels that a good team unit is essential. “Baseball is definitely heavily reliant on the team,” he said.

Telesco is more than happy with the teammates he has. “Everyone has a common goal. If you are around people that have a common goal, it’s fun, it brings good team camaraderie,” said Telesco.

He has won a couple of league championships in high school, but admits that the high school league wasn’t that competitive. He is eager for success with the Rams.
“Hopefully we can win the league this year. We’ve got a good team. I’m excited about it,” he said.

Telesco is seeing a difference between college baseball and high school baseball. “There’s so much time that goes into being a college baseball player,” he said.

“The pace of the game is a lot faster. It’s hard to adjust to the pace of the game, but it’s a challenge you know, a challenge getting used to it.”

The Rams’ season so far has seen 13 wins and 8 losses. Telesco feels the team could have had more wins.

“Some games in there we shouldn’t have lost. I think we could have hung in there and won, but that’s how baseball works sometimes,” he said.

Telesco says of the season so far, “All in all, I think it’s been a good season; we just need to continue it.”

“Preparation and hard work, those are key,” he added. “It all works out in the end, when you put the hard work in.” And Telesco is putting in that hard work.

“I’m working out, hitting in the cages, always trying to prepare,” he said.

Telesco can be found at Euless Ball Park, preparing the Rams home field. “I was here dragging and watering the field, I like to have a nice looking field,” he said.

Telesco’s personal goals are “to keep playing as long as possible.” His goals for the team are ultimately “Topping the state.” With the dedication put in by Telesco and his fellow Rams, that could very well be achieved this season.
