Alyssa White, forward for Fresno City College’s Women’s soccer team, has been playing the sport since she was six years old. Growing up in Fresno, California, she initially tried a variety of sports, but soccer quickly became her chosen path.
From a young age, White’s love for soccer was nurtured by her family.
“My mom put me in a bunch of different sports, but soccer was the one I got to pick,” White said.
Over the years, her connection to the sport deepened, not just because of the game itself, but because of the friendships and bonds she formed along the way.
Initially playing as a center defender, White eventually transitioned to forward, a position that complements her natural speed.
“I chose forward because I’m really fast, and I like that I can outrun the defense,” White said.
Her speed has allowed her to thrive as a forward, where she’s able to make quick, decisive plays and challenge opposing defenses.
White’s path to playing soccer at the collegiate level wasn’t a straightforward one. She wasn’t initially planning to continue her soccer career after high school until FCC head coach Oliver Germond reached out to her.
“He came to one of my high school games, and after a few conversations and promises, I decided to give it a chance,” White said.
Even with the experience, White had faced her share of challenges along the way. One of the more personal struggles she’s dealt with is feeling undersized as a college athlete.
“I’m kind of small for a forward, and there are some big girls out there. But I’ve learned how to use my body and focus on my strengths rather than my weaknesses,” White said.
Her ability to stay focused on what she excels at has allowed her to overcome this obstacle and continue to thrive.
White’s love for soccer isn’t just about her personal success and more importantly being there for her teammates.
“My team motivates me. I love them, and I’m helping out 30 other girls. I can’t let my weaknesses dictate what happens on the field because then I’m letting my team down,” said White.
The bond she shares with her teammates is a driving force, pushing her to perform her best for the benefit of the group.
Looking ahead, White has clear goals for the current season.
“My short-term goal is to get All-American again. I got it last season, and I also got co-player of the year. This year, I want to be player of the year,” White said.
As a nursing major, White’s long-term focus is on her academic and career aspirations, which means her time playing soccer may be coming to an end after community college.
“I’m not fully against playing at a four-year, but with the demands of the nursing program, it might not be possible,” White said.
Outside of soccer, White is very creative. She enjoys drawing and painting, using her artistic talents as a way to unwind from the demands of sports and school. She’s also highly social, cherishing her time with friends and loved ones. Despite her confident and strong demeanor on the field, White describes herself as a kind, selfless person, which sometimes surprises people who don’t know her well.
