Battle of the Pump Ends with Rams Still Holding Trophy

Domination.

That is the only word adequate to describe the actions of the Fresno City College Rams against the Reedley Tigers on the football field on Saturday, culminating in a 58-7 win.

Fresno took the field against a winless Reedley that features a big play offense and a struggling defense, and it more of the same for the hapless tigers.

The Rams defense was swarming all night long, forcing a fumble that sophomore defensive back Chandler Cocklin.

That play set the toe for the entire game, as the Rams defense would hold Reedley to just 7 points in the first half.

Reedley would not score another single point from then on against Rams head coach Tony Caviglia’s defense.

Caviglia was proud of the effort of his defense against a Reedley offense capable of exploding at any given time.

“We played very well on defense.  I was very happy with the speed and effort that we played with,” said Caviglia.

“Woo Varner Jaquan Alvies and Anthony Shepard were active all night and around the ball.”

Varner finished the game with seven tackles, six of them solo and one for loss of yards. Alvies had a strong showing with a sack and fumble recovery to go with his two tackles.

After halftime, it isn’t uncommon for teams to let off the gas and allow another team to get back into the game. Even with a big lead, no game is safe until the final whistle sounds.

Caviglia liked the way his team took the field after the break.

“Our team played much faster and stronger in the second half. We had a good mindset going into the third quarter after halftime,” he said.

Now the pump will get to sit in Caviglia’s office for another year, right where it belongs.
