The State’s Best

After a season in which the Fresno City College Rams won the Valley Conference title and advanced to the Northern California championship game, four players have been named to the All-State Community College Football Team. Representing the Rams from the offense are wide receiver Corvaughn Archie and lineman John Alvarado. On the defensive side, linebacker Keith Hurst and deep back Tim Adebayo were selected.

For Adebayo the award came as a surprise. “Not many people get that award. It shows the hard work and dedication that we put in the offseason when nobody is looking,” said Adebayo. Throughout the season, Adebayo stayed motivated through his desire for winning and with support from his family, friends and church.

The sophomore from Buchanan will not return to the Rams next season but he plans to get even better wherever he plays. “I need to work even harder, spend more time in the weight room, and pay attention to the little things. I’m always trying to reach the next level,” said Adebayo. “Junior college football is not easy. I had to stay focused. “Adebayo was also a unanimous selection for the 2010 Valley All Conference Team. He received the most votes among defensive backs.

Wide receiver Corvaughn Archie won the award despite mising three games with a broken leg. Archie caught seven touchdown passes and led the conference with 751 receiving yards. “God is my ultimate motivator. It’s an opportunity for me to show what God can do for me,” said Archie. “My mom, dad, and teammates also motivate me. I play for them.”

Archie has not decided where he will play next year but in the meantime he will continue to work on his game. “I can always get better and better,” said Archie. “It’s about learning the plays, working on route running, and always working hard. It’s like any other craft. You can always do more.”

In addition to being named to the All-State Team, Archie is also an honorable mention for the All-American Team. “The hard work paid off. I thank God for the opportunity,” said Archie.

Linebacker Keith Hurst quickly adjusted to the Rams’ system after transferring from West Hills College. “Everybody was so welcoming. The coaching staff always pushed me hard to make me successful,” said Hurst.  This past season Hurst recorded a total of 69 tackles. “Just being able to suit up as a Ram was an accomplishment for me. Some people take it for granted,” he said. The sophomore hopes to improve as he takes his game elsewhere. “I’ll put school first, continue to work hard in football and do whatever the coaches need me to do,” said Hurst.

Lineman John Alvarado was a major reason why the Rams allowed only 17 sacks this past season. With Alvarado holding up the offensive line, the Rams finished with the most passing yards in the conference. He also paved the way for the likes of James Holland and Leighton Settle, who both had a stellar season running the ball.

“It’s an honor to be named one of the elite athletes in California. I have worked hard to achieve that goal,” said Alvarado. Before the season began, Alvarado set a goal to make the All-Conference Team and the All-State Team. He achieved both goals.

Additionally, Alvarado uses football as a tool to further his education. “Football gives me a chance to get scholarships and get a higher education,” said Alvarado.

“This season I matured a lot. I played hard and the game came naturally to me,” said Alvarado.
