How to Keep Busy This Summer

Spring break has ended and summer vacation is getting closer.  Some people might have a few summer plans, while many might be wondering, “What am I going to do with all that free time?”  While we all have different budgets to work off of, here are a few ideas to make your summer time the best it can be:

Wild Waters and The Island

Let’s face it.  Fresno summers are HOT.  Sometimes, it seems as though that one three-letter word does not even describe the intense heat we have in the summer.  Season passes to a water park near by would help you cool off while having a great time.  You can go all day everyday, or just for an hour every few days.  It’s up to you!  It’s also a great way to get that great summertime tan.

Five-Dollar Concerts

Different radio stations have different artists and bands come for concerts.  However, a great summer event held by Kiss Country is their $5 concerts in the park.   It’s a great way to spend the night with family and friends, outside in the cooler summer air, with some great music.  Check out your favorite station to see if they do something similar.

Road Trips

A road trip is a great way to see part of the country and to go places you’ve never been.  While gas prices might be high, if you pile as many friends as you can fit into your car and share the prices, the cost isn’t nearly as bad.  You can drive to Arizona to the Grand Canyon – just a 9-hour drive!  If you pack up a cooler and stay in cheap motels, the prices are even lower to go.  There are many sights around our country that are breath taking.  If you get a chance, I really recommend packing up that car and hitting the road.

California Sites

While there are many places to see in our country, there are many to see in our own State alone.  Take a break from our Fresno summertime heat.  Go on a miniature road trip to the beach or to Yosemite.  Build a sand castle or hike up the National Park’s beautiful paths.  There are so many places in our state that are just waiting to be discovered!

Volunteering

Find somewhere that needs a helping hand.  Many places would love to have any help that is offered.  Check out soup kitchens, food banks, or even the SPCA.  There’s a lot to learn in our lifetime, and a lot of great people to meet.  This is definitely one type of activity where you can do both.

Build a House

By seeing the caption above you might be thinking, “Build a HOUSE?  What??”  Yes, build a house!  There are different organizations that go to International locations to help those in need.  Build a house in Mexico.  Help with the Japanese Disaster Relief.  Depending on the location depends on the price.  However, this is definitely something worth looking into if you have the drive and the means to go.  Experience a different culture.  Smell new smells, taste new tastes, hear new sounds, see new sights, and meet new people, all while serving other’s who speak another language.

Nanny, Freelance Work, or Find a Job

Maybe you don’t want to work all summer.  Maybe you’re like many people who have a few trips during the summer and can’t work a “regular” job this summer.  No matter the situation – there are ways you can make some money.  Whether that be by being a nanny, freelance photographer, house sitting for others traveling, or applying at stores and restaurants for a full time job.  The possibilities are endless.

Cheap Cruises

Living in California we have an advantage.  While most people have to fly somewhere to get on a cruise boat, we are just a few hours away from a cruise ship dock.  Often different cruise lines have different deals – some too good to pass up!  Keep an eye on those prices and your sunscreen and swimsuit packed and ready to go!!

Summer School

Summer School.  That might not be our favorite phrase in the world, but it’s something to do.  It would also help you get ahead (or caught up – depending on your situation) on your education.

Camping

Turn off your Bluetooth, cell phones, laptops.  (Wait …They have “Off” buttons still?)  Become one with nature.  Hitch a tent, roast some marshmallows, and watch for some shooting stars.  Don’t forget to take a few friends, a camera, and a guitar.

No matter your financial or job situation – the summer is FULL of possibilities!  Get ready for a good time, lots of laughter, and a nice tan.  What will you do with your summer??
