Tony Cantu to be Interim President

Starting April 1, 2011, Tony Cantu, current vice president of academic affairs, will be the interim president of Fresno City College. Cantu will be in this position until a permanent replacement for Dr. Cynthia Azari is found. Azari will become president of Riverside College on April 1.

History Month Events

Feb.  16 –AfriKan Tent, featuring live music, food and vendors, will be on display in the free speech area.

Feb. 24 — Dr. Malik Simba, CSUF Professor, will lecture on “Black Marxism and American Constitutionalism” at 10:00 a.m. in the OAB, Room 251.

Feb. 24 — A celebration of Kehinde Solwazi, retiring African American professor, will be held  in the student lounge. It will be honoring his 40+ years of service to the community.

Feb. 28 — “The Wall of Honor” commencement ceremony will take place on Feb. 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the African American Historical and Cultural Museum in downtown Fresno.  Every February, the African American Historical and Cultural Museum, in conjunction with the State Center Community College District, recognizes outstanding African-American members of the community who have dedicated themselves to brilliance. Started in 1996, “The Wall of Honor” pays tribute to the racial strife of the past by showing what the sons and daughters of a once disenfranchised people have come to accomplish. This year’s honorees include Pamela Freeman Fobbs, Dr. Emory Luck and Darlene Roach.

Volunteers for Kids Day

The 2011 Kids Day campaign is coming up. If you want to contribute in the fundraising by selling the special edition of the Fresno Bee, you must be registered. You may pick up your supplies  at the FCC Student Activities Office.  A preliminary number is requested by Thursday, February 17, 2011.  Contact the Student Activities Office at (559) 265-5711 for more information.

Afterschool Child Program

Fresno City College and KIDmunity Music are teaming up to offer afterschool music to kids grades K-6. Music director Catherine Cooper and FCC professor Julie Dana are excited at the chance to offer affordable, extracurricular music to families in our community. FCC college students who major in music or a related field will also assist in the classroom.

For $60 each, participants will learn music from around the world and discover and develop their singing voices.  They will perform together with students from across Fresno in a culminating concert at FCC.  Registration forms and fees may be mailed to the FCC Music Department, c/o Julie Dana at 1101 East University Avenue, Fresno, CA, 93741. Completed forms may also be placed in Julie Dana’s mailbox in the division office in the Theater building, TA-103.  Checks should be made payable to FCC Choral Music. March in March

The Fresno City College Associated Student Government recently decided to change its plans to attend the March In March in Sacramento. Instead, the ASG is organizing a local march that will start in the Free Speech area of FCC and end at Fresno City Hall. This March will be taking place on March 14. More information regarding this development will be featured in the March 2 issue of the Rampage.

FCC’s Got Talent

Got an act? Want to perform for cash prizes? Then sign up for FCC’s Got Talent Show! First place: $300; Second place $200; Third place $100.  The deadline to enter is Feb. 25.  The entry form is available on the library home page.  Auditions will be held in March but the date and time are still to be announced.  The performance will take place April 7, 2011 at 6 p.m. in the FCC Theatre.  The three basic rules are as follows:  No more than five people in a performance group; all performers must be currently registered SCCCD students; one student must attend FCC. All performances must be live, no more than five minutes and showcase comedy, music, dance, or drama.  If you have any questions, email [email protected]
