The Fresno City College Rams lost their softball game against the College of the Sequoias Giants by the score of 5-1.  This was the first Central Valley Conference game for both teams. This also marked the first home game for the Fresno City College Rams since they opened the softball season against Bakersfield on Feb. 1.

The Rams came into the game with an overall record of 8-2 while C.O.S came in with a record of 15-2.

A key contribution to the Giants win was the pitching of Mayleen Mazon. Mazon was able to keep the Rams off balance all game allowing just three hits and one run. The Giants pitching allowed them to capitalize on plays and create many outs.

“As a team, we have a real strong bond. I feel confident in our team, we work hard on defense and we came together as a team today,” said Mazon.

Although the Giants won, they also committed three errors that the Rams failed to capitalize on.

“Although we got the win, that was not Giant softball. We did not play to our full ability today. Giant softball is more than just winning and scoring runs,” said College of Sequoias coach Michelle Bolt.

San Joaquin Memorial High  product Grace Combs pitched for the Rams in the loss. The Giants made contact with Combs’ pitching combining for eight hits while scoring five runs. Despite the loss, Combs feels like the season is still young and with hard work more wins are possible.

“Obviously I am not happy about the loss, but I know what kind of team we have and we did not play to our potential today,” Combs said.

The lone offensive bright spot for the home team was an RBI single that scored the Rams only run.
“You can’t score if you can’t hit, and we just didn’t hit the ball today,” said head coach Rhonda Williams.

The Ram’s next game will be a part of the Ohlone Tournament on March 2, 2013.
