Angel Reese is one of the Women’s National Basketball Association top players and is known for the aggression of her play. She recently walked in the Victoria’s Secret runway show this October and received a lot of compliments but also backlash. This specific modeling runway show is an iconic moment. This is the Super Bowl for women. Seeing many iconic women of different body sizes, color and appearance is empowering. Angel Reese was one of the special guests and many people didn’t see it coming.
As the years have gone, by this show has evolved. Along with the supermodels that walk that has changed too. For the past years, Victoria’s Secret has really emphasized on making the show for all women of all races and body shapes to walk.
Many women in the world could relate to how the media has portrayed an unrealistic image of women. This has led to many women overthinking about themselves and many being insecure. Not to mention all of the self-worth questioning. The constant exposure of always seeing models, celebrities and edited pictures of women has caused a pressure of unrealistic expectations.
Women go and pay thousands and millions to fulfill the void of reality. Sometimes I even catch myself thinking about how to look a certain way for others to get a certain image of me.
The constant reminder of these expectations gets tiring and makes me feel defeated. For those reasons it is important for us women to remind ourselves that these expectations are simply not true. Self-love is the best way to love ourselves. Everyone is beautiful in their own way.
The backlash the media gave her was due to her being a basketball player. Many thought she should have just stuck to her basketball career and not modeling. Another comment I saw on the Page Six TikTok with 242 likes reads, “When did they start walking plus size streetwalkers and hoodratz?”
She did a phenomenal job and I truly loved seeing her walk that runway. It was empowering to see more black women in this specific runway show. I also think that the time being in what we’re experiencing in the world has a lot to do with her backlash. Racism comments were out the roof with her.
It’s hard for me to believe that people truly only think that white skinny women are attractive enough to walk in the Victoria’s Secret runway show. As many of them are beautiful and truly do deserve to be part of this show it’s also important to see other women of different races, body shapes, and work ethics. I’m really glad that Victoria’s Secret decided to change it up and give other women an opportunity to experience this show.
