Fresno City College plans to move forward with a project to replace its old gym boilers, which have been in operation since 1988. The boilers are responsible for heating the campus pools, locker room showers and providing warm air to several parts of the gym.
Due to their size and the emissions they produce, the current boilers are heavily regulated by the San Joaquin Valley Air District. FCC must closely monitor how long the boilers are used each year, as well as how much energy they consume.
The planned replacement will bring in new energy efficiency along with low emission boilers that will not only reduce FCC’s carbon footprint but also allow the facilities to be used more freely and effectively without restrictions.
District Director of Maintenance and Transportation for the State Center Community College District Jonathan Kepler said this project will replace these older units with new energy efficient and low emissions boilers. According to Kepler, the boilers will reduce our carbon emissions while at the same time expanding the campus’s ability to provide adequate facilities for our programs, students and student athletes.
Kepler ensured that the project will provide fewer water shutdowns and more consistent access for students and athletes.
“This project will also give the campus redundancy within this system to help maintain normal operations during both maintenance timeframes and unexpected system failures.” Kepler said
Kepler said this project is currently at the Division of the State Architect for plan review and approval.
“We are anticipating a construction start date for spring of 2026,” Kepler said.
