Fresno City College’s baseball coaches broke the state record of 1,072 all-time wins by a California community college head baseball coach on Feb. 15.

Head Coach Ron Scott and assistant coach Eric Solberg’s number of wins is now 1,079.

Scott and Solberg have been coaching FCC’s baseball team for 34 years, and they won their first game coaching on Feb. 3, 1989.

Coach Scott said it was a “relief” that they broke the record.

“A lot of people were talking about it rather than other things, so it was nice to get that out of the way,” Scott said.

Solberg, who is also the head coach for men’s soccer, shared Scott’s sentiments.

“It is nice to put it behind us and move on to the regular season,” he said. “I was certainly happy for coach Scott and proud to be around for all of them.”

Bret Carrell, a shortstop and second baseman for the team, said it was “awesome” that Scott broke the record.

“It’s pretty crazy, I mean you gotta be coaching a long time to be able to accomplish something like that,” Carrell said. “To be a part of the team that did that for him is pretty special.”

Scott also said that breaking the record was something he assumed would happen.

“At the beginning of the year, we needed four wins, we had 40 [games] scheduled, so we knew we were going to get it,” Scott said. “It was fun. Now we can just get back to business, concentrating on winning our league and getting in the playoffs.”

Both coaches believe the team is good this season and has a great chance of doing well in the playoffs. In the five games they have lost, they have only lost by one run in each.

“I believe we have a strong team this year and we are the team to beat in the CVC conference and I think we can challenge at the state level,” Solberg said.

FCC’s baseball team has started their season with 10 wins and five losses. They have won nine of their last 11 games.

The FCC baseball team’s regular season ends in late April. The schedule for all of their games can be found here.
