The Rampage Staff won numerous awards including the Pacesetter Award.

The Fresno City College Rampage staff took home several awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges State Conference held at the Burbank Marriott March 22 to 24.

The Rampage received eight awards in the write-in publication contests and 11 awards in the on-the-spot contests.

For the write-in publication contests, the Rampage was recognized in the categories of general excellence, editorial writing, column writing, front page layout, photo illustration and webcast/broadcast news.

Former Opinion Editor Frank Lopez received both fourth place and an honorable mention in the editorial writing contest. Lopez was also awarded another honorable mention along with former News Editor Samantha Domingo and Art Director Ram Reyes in the webcast/broadcast news contest.

Domingo also received an honorable mention in the feature story contest while Reyes received second place in both the front page layout and photo illustration contest.

Rounding out the numerous write-in publication awards is former Broadcast Editor Julease Graham, who received an honorable mention in the column writing contest.

For the on-the-spot contests, the Rampage notably received its first-ever Pacesetter award and was also recognized in copy editing, critical review, editorial cartoon, news writing, opinion writing, social media, sports writing, team feature and video story.

Opinion Editor Tommy Tribble won first place in the opinion writing contest while Editor-in-Chief Ashleigh Panoo received second and fourth place in the copy editing and news writing contests respectively.

I was extremely surprised,” said Tribble. “At the time, I thought that the work that I turned in was inadequate. I leaped out of my chair and did a double take to make sure it was actually true.”

Reporter Tasha Turner and Entertainment Editor Noah Villaverde were both recognized in the social media contest with Turner receiving third place and Villaverde receiving an honorable mention.

Turner also received an honorable mention in the editorial cartoon contest and Villaverde received another honorable mention in the critical review contest.

Reporters Paulina Rodriguez and Loren Daniels received fourth place in the team feature contest. Rodriguez also received fourth place along with News/Multimedia Editor Larry Valenzuela in the video story contest.

“While in Burbank, we had to find a story to produce within a few hours,” said Daniels.  “We worked as a team and gave us a chance to assign each other to different duties that suit our individual skill sets.”

Rounding out the on-the-spot contests is Sports Editor Anthony De Leon, who received an honorable mention in the sports writing contest.

“I am very proud that the Rampage got the Pacesetter award,” said Rampage adviser Dympna Ugwu-Oju. “I am proud of every single student that came, with each receiving an award. That is quite unusual, and such a huge accomplishment. They worked hard, and it shows.”
