The Fresno City College Community Orchestra begins the fall semester highlighting hornist Keith Pepper. The program promptly began with Erich Wolfgang Korngold, a founder of film music. This lively piece is from a film titled “The Sea Hawk” a 1940s pirates in the caribbean. Korngold was a prodigy and wrote enough music for two films in this score.

Conducting the orchestra is Jeffrey T. Sandersier, music director since 1991. Sandersier uses the versatility and range of the violins to replace the lack of wind instruments. The result is a pleasant and swooping take on this elaborate and complex piece of work. It is enjoyable to watch the talented and experienced group of violins effortlessly tackle their challenge.

Next is Keith Pepper on Horn Concerto E Flat Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A professional piece, Pepper is front and center. A flashy piece with beautiful horn parts, Pepper nails his solo. The difficulty in trills executed well, the orchestra a bit powerful in their support.

Finally the Symphony No. 3 E Flat Minor “Rhenish” by Robert Schumann. A Romantic Era work, it has five movements instead of the traditional four. Enjoyed from the powerful sonata to vigorous end, the orchestra with its 20 violinists and diversity of age, skill and occupation is a wonderful night filled with a wide variety of music.

The next Community Orchestra concert is Nov. 27 in the OAB Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. $8 general, $6 students and seniors.
