FCC Jazz Fest

On Thursday April 4, Fresno City College held the 23rd annual City Jazz Festival in the FCC Theatre. Throughout the day, student jazz ensembles played leading up to the performances by the FCC Latin Jazz Ensemble, FCC Jazz Ensemble and guest artist Tom Scott.

Numerous high schools from around the valley played in front of judges (university professors). Tom Scott also held two improvisation clinics in the Recital Hall.

According to the event’s pamphlet, more than 700 jazz groups have participated and more than 100,000 dollars have been awarded in scholarships. Guest artist Tom Scott has earned three Grammy awards, has recorded 31 solo recordings, and has more than 450 credits as a guest or solo arranger.

“A great musician is one who is devoted to their craft in a very, very intense way…I don’t think you choose music, I think music chooses you,” said Scott .

FCC’s Latin Jazz ensemble is directed by George Ramirez. Featured clinicians included Dave Gregoric, Brian Hamada, Jeff Jarvis, Aaron Lington and Tom Wakeling. Director of the Jazz Fest is jazz studies instructor Mike Dana.

“I try to bring people here that I would  want to work with my students,” said Dana.

Ian Smith, piano player, and Edward Fritz, drummer, are two members of the FCC Jazz Ensemble. Both believe taking time to practice and learn more is a way to excel in their talents.

“For me the pursuit of music is kind of an ongoing journey and I never really intend to stop,” said Smith.

More FCC jazz events include: FCC Jazz Hop Showcase featuring FCC students and faculty at the Revenue Café at 7 p.m., FCC Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater on May 6 at 7:30 p.m. and FCC Jazz Singers and Latin Jazz Ensemble at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater on May 7 at 7:30 p.m.
