10 great inventions invented by women

It used to be known for ages that women should only stay at home and take care of the family while science and social activities were men’s prerogatives. However, there are lots of women in history who invented things that are not “girly” at all.

In honor of Women’s history month, here’s a list of some of the greatest inventions that were invented by women

    1. Bullet-proof vest
In 1965, Dr. Stephanie Kwolek invented Kevlar, a synthetic material, which is five times stronger than steel and became a good basis for the bullet-proof vests. Her invention has saved thousands of lives of police officers, firefighters and military.

    2. Muffler
This acoustic filter was invented by Elle Dolores Johns in 1917 so the world around us became less noisy.

    3. Coffee filters
Thanks to Melitta Bentz, all the coffee lovers don’t have to go through long procedure to make another cup. The first cone coffee filter Melitta made herself by twisting a sheet from her school notebook in 1909.

    4. Windshield Wipers
Mary Anderson felt bad for drivers who had to stop the car in the blizzard to shovel the the snow off their windshields. She patented her invention in 1905.

    5. Circular Saw
Tabitha Babbitt watched men sawing logs with a special saw with two handles where they had to pull back and forward for a long time. Although, it was a hard work for both men, the logs would really get sawed only after they move the saw forward. Babbitt thought it was a waste of energy and in 1810 she invented a prototype of a circular saw which was later used in sawmill industry.

    6. Dishwasher
Missing a few dishes from her favorite set, Josephine Cochrane created a machine that would only wash the dishes and not break them. This happened in 1886 but the device was not recognized as a necessary supply until 40 years later.

    7. Diapers
Exhausted mom and housewife Marion Donovan sat at the sewing machine with a shower curtain and after a few attempts made a waterproof base for the disposable diapers. Comparing to the rubber diapers that were already on the market, Donovan’s invention did not rub the baby’s skin and didn’t cause the intertigos.

    8. Pink champagne
In 1808 Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin improved the synonym to “celebration” by developing the special technology which makes the champagne crystal-clear in three months and makes the drink taste better.

    9. Wi-Fi
During World War 2 European actress Hedy Lamarr and her neighbor George Antheil patented a secret communication tool that would alter the frequency of transmitted radio signals to make it harder for the enemy to detect them. Since 1962 this device was used in American torpedoes and now used in mobile networks and Wi-Fi.

    10. Snow blower
In 1862 office clerk Cynthia Westover said that it should be clean not only inside the house but outside as well and made a first and simple snow blower.
