    State or Bust

For two decades the FCC baseball team has dominated the Central Valley Conference and the state. The proof is in their  CVC  records: 30-10 in 2009 and 21-3.

The program established a history of success under current head coach Ron Scott, winning 30 or more games a season for the past 18 years as well as reaching the postseason 20 consecutive times. During his 21 year tenure, Scott has amassed 16 CVC titles, seven Northern California Championships, multiple State Championship appearances, as well as one state title in 1992.

“You just have to run a positive program, to make kids want to come here. The kids work hard for us and we work hard for them.”

With a 97 percent transfer rate and several players in the major leagues, FCC now boasts one of the most successful baseball programs in California.

This season comes with a whole new set of players, but Scott said the expectations stay the same, “Our expectations are to win the league again, get farther in the playoffs, and win the state championship. I think those are the expectations every year.”

With regards to players and talent, this season the team has a sophomore-heavy roster. Eighteen of 29 players are returning as veterans, experience will not be an issue. Scott said, “I think we have a sophomore dominated lineup. They and our freshmen have played through tough winter ball, so there is quite a bit of positive carry-over.”

Returning this season are many of experienced players and standouts. Among those are some players who are expected to step up and become leaders on the team. “I would think that we have several players who are leaders. They are the types that lead by example,” Scott said. Some of these players are, “Tyson Perez, Michael York, and Clay Cederquist.”

The 11 freshman players step into this year with a team already rich in experience. They also enter into a program favored to win the CVC. With such a historic program, when players come into the program, Scott said, “They feel proud. They’re good enough to play here. They’re on a team that’s ranked in the top ten in the state.” Most of the athletes that are recruited are from the Central Valley.

With every season bringing its own array of memories and players, each season has the components to be unique. What makes this year’s season uniqueis that, “It’s a new season. It’s a pretty big turnover every year and this season there is pretty good depth at every position. There’s competition at every position,” Scott said.

With the success that the baseball program has had, winning is nothing new. “I don’t think there are any external expectations; our expectations are internal. We set the bar really high, especially as coaches,” Scott said.

As players grow in the course of the program, they also grow within themselves. Through FCC baseball every player is ingrained with the lesson, which coach Scott defined as, “Nothing comes easy. Baseball is like life, you have to put forth your best effort.”
