Q&A With Fresno Mayoral Candidate: Henry T. Perea

Q: With energy costs soaring and the economy sinking, what can you do as mayor to bring alternative energy such as solar panels for everyday homes and as well as making it affordable?

A: “A way we can make solar energy affordable is through rebates. As of now whoever decides to use solar energy, the government gives $2,000 for the costs. If they would add another $2,000 on top of it, more people would start using the alternatives. You could end up saving $12,000 in electricity bills just by switching over.”

Q: Are you for or against the idea of building a new nuclear power plant in Fresno?

A: “I am completely against the idea.”

Q: What are your plans to improve Fresno’s sustainability?

A: “We definitely need more green house buildings, use more renewable energy, more public transportation buses that are eco friendly, and to clean up our air quality. I grew up in the generation where we could never see the mountains; all we can see is the smog in the air. For Fresno to have the third dirtiest air quality in the nation, it is a serious issue that needs to be taken care of.”

Q:What is your standing on proposition 8? (not allowing same sex marriage)

A: “I am opposed to proposition 8. It is all about the equality. I was raised Catholic, but people forget that the constitution gives rights to people. To take those rights away from anyone is wrong.”

Q:Do you have any plans on bringing more jobs to Fresno?

A: “We need to bring more green jobs, engineering, and architect work to Fresno. We also need to have more job training available for the jobs that we already have. Having job training in schools can also allow students to get trained for jobs they can do with their hands to prepare them in the future if they decide not to go to college and instead work right out of school.

Q;Why should a Fresno City College student vote for you?

A: ” I would like to put more entertainment in Fresno so that people can have something to do here. In the Cultural Arts district I would like to restore the area, fix up the buildings, put in some restaurant’s, stores and have local artist decorate the area. It could become a more urban Tower District. I believe that I have the capacity and the ability to do that more progressively.
