The not so big Fresno Fair

The not so big Fresno Fair
    By: Alexis Abrahamson

When some think of the Fresno Fair, they probably think of food. You never know what the newest deep fried concoction will be. Young and old may look forward to cool rides and unique exhibits. However, it’s not all its hyped up to be.

Today, there is something else to look forward to, police search and seizure procedures. Visitors passing through the entrance will have a complete body check, similar to boarding an airplane. Law enforcement checks pockets and purses. The only thing missing is detainment and hearing your Miranda rights.

If you make it pass the check-point, locating food is not a problem because booths are set up like a major food fair. It is probably one of the few good things about the fair, you have so many choices of food. Then again you can get the same option at Fresno’s Fashion Fair. However, mall shoppers would never pay $8.00 for a deep fried soda.

The exhibits are like television re-runs, pretty much the same every year. The names may have changed for the award winning produce exhibit and the art exhibit.

And let’s not forget the area where a bunch of happy vendors try their best to sell you items that you will not use or would fit nicely at in the yearly yard sell.

What’s a fair without games? But can you afford it? It will costs $2.00 for two attempts at throwing a big ball into a small hole ten feet away. If you win, you just won a 99 cent stuffed cartoon character that only cost a penny to make in China.

Nothing appears to be new at the Fresno Fair. At the end of the day, your wallet is empty and you leave with nothing to show you for your day.

Would it be such a bad thing if the city officials spiced up the fair just a little bit? The least they can do is get some cool new exhibits or games that are more entertaining to play and at a cheaper price. The fair was revamped, more might attend.

For those faithful fair goer’s, the concerts and horse races are a “must-see.” They’re the only attractions worth going for.
