Fashion follies: how to avoid looking bad

Fashion is one of the most versatile industries out there. It is also full of controversy. From Vogue, to Elle, to Hollywood starlets fashion is everywhere.

There are so many different styles out there and not everyone has the same sense of style. There are those of who have a great sense of fashion and those who can not match a pair of pants with a reasonable shirt. Fashion has become so much more than just an industry. It has become a means of expression, a livelihood for some, and the number one source of Capitalism.

What better place is there to see the clash of different fashion styles than on a college campus? College students are constantly experimenting with different fashion trends and styles. There are over 22,000 students enrolled in Fresno City College and each one of these students brings his or her sense of fashion to the campus. The FCC campus if full of students who have an excellent sense of fashion and those who have no idea what they are doing. If our campus was a Versace fashion show and the students took on the role of models, how would we be judged?

However, FCC is not a fashion show, if it were, we would see women walking around in huge trapeze dresses, men wearing nothing but Versace sunglasses, and Louis Vuitton would be our dean. Nevertheless, some students wear clothes that are somewhat inappropriate for college or just down right tasteless.

The reality is that people do get judged based on what they wear and first impressions are important. Thus, because FCC is a college campus, there are certain rules of fashion that men and women should take into consideration.

    WOMEN

    1. Tiny-miniskirts and short shorts: If the skirt you are wearing exposes the color of your underwear then it is probably a good idea to go an inch or two longer. If you wear shorts that reveal your new Brazilian wax, then it is not appropriate for school.

    2. Heels that you can’t walk in: If you find that walking from your math class to your psychology class in your heels is one of your biggest obstacles, then those heels have got to go. High heels are great and what woman does not appreciate a great pair of heels. However, wearing heels that you can not walk in is a bad idea, especially college students do a lot of walking.

    3. Let me see your thong: Girls,” Victoria is not a secret anymore.” What ever happened to leaving something for the imagination? Thongs were invented to get rid of those ugly panty lines. Thus, showing off the thong itself, kind of destroys their purpose.

    4. Pants that make everything pop out: It is not very attractive or suitable to wear pants that show off every bump and curve of your body. Pants that fit too tightly on a woman are tacky. When I say tight, I mean the “four sizes too small,” kind of tight, not pants that are designed to have a tight fit. If you know that you are a size six, buying pants that are a size two, is probably not a good idea. Clothes are meant to accentuate our body, not make it look like our body is crying to get out of them.

    5. Too much cleavage: It can not be too comfortable if you have to keep pulling your shirt up. As women, we get offended if men look down there when they are talking to us, instead of our eyes. A little cleavage is sexy, as long as your twins do not keep falling out of your shirt.

    MEN

1.Too dressed up: Every woman loves a man in a suit. However, wearing a suit to college, especially with tennis shoes, is a bad idea. Suites should be worn during work, for an interview, wedding, or some other formal event. How can anyone concentrate on a sociology lecture when they have to sit through it for an hour, wearing a suit? There is an exception; if the student is required to wear a suit to college due to an interview on campus, a project, or some other related activity, then dress away.

2.Pants that sag: Just as most people do not want to see all of Victoria’s secretes revealed, we do not want to see someone’s Tommy Hilfiger or happy face boxers. What is the purpose of wearing pants, if they sag all the way down to the knees? Moreover, I always wonder how those men walk without having their pants fall down completely.

3.Too much bling: These days, guys seem to wear more jewelry than women. A nice wrist watch looks good on a man. However, if you have so much jewelry on that the sun reflects off of you, then some of it has got to go.

    4. Guys with tight pants: Skinny jeans are back but I still do not think that they look good on a man. Do you really want your pants to fit tighter on you than your girlfriend’s pants fit on her? Also, it is not very attractive when a guy’s pants are so tight that “everything” shows.

Some students might find that they agree with these rules and some students might find them ridiculous. Just like in the fashion world; not every designer follows the same rules. I am not suggesting that college students should wear Versace, just that some fashion trends are not suitable on a college campus.
