    Slow Progress Move after Katrina

    Slow progress move after Katrina

    By Pedro Quintana

August 29, 2007 was the second anniversary, which changed everyone in New Orleans. The day that hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast. It was a Category 3 when it hit the New Orleans area, it broke threw the levees and flooded 80 percent of the City. It was the worst national disaster in the United States history. Bodies floating, people needing medical attention, and worst no help with the federal government after 24 hours that the hurricane had scared the city. Many asking were is the United States Federal government, the most powerful nation in the world to help them when they are in this crisis? Many in Washington D.C. were asking that same question.

So now it has been two struggling years for the people that live in New Orleans. With Crime that is now at an all time high. Bodies that are still unidentified by there loved ones. Many without a home, only about one -third could say that they have a home, the rest are living in Federal Emergency Management Agency( FEMA) trailers, some in the streets. Katrina left at least 1,836 dead across the Gulf Coast, with 75 percent of those deaths occurring in New Orleans. A third of the city’s population, nearly 150,000 people, still hasn’t returned to the city. Levees still need to be fixed, and some are not strong enough to hold a Hurricane like Katrina. Some residents fear that if another storm like Katrina would hit, the city won’t be ready for it.

Angry Residents in New Orleans and parts of the Louisiana are protesting to the government, saying why it is taking so long for help to get there and help them to rebuild parts of the state. Many think that the government has forgotten them. On Aug 29 president bush spoke to the people in Louisiana comforting them saying that they have not forgotten them and that he and his team are working really “HARD” for the residents. Many feel that president Bush is not doing enough.” It still feels and looks like Hurricane Katrina had just hit New Orleans” said Pamela Brim.

Two years, Two years, that the residents have been suffering, some that don’t have nothing to call Home, some nothing to provide for there family. Yes, we have FEMA. But that is not enough for a large family living in a small trailer that is custom to fit only about 4 persons. Two years, I believe that is enough time for the government to help control the violence, Help build stronger levees, help the residents in New Orleans get back to there feet. I believe that the government has forgotten the people of New Orleans, and shown there focus in the Iraq war. We give money to Pakistan so they can catch Terriost. But we can not help the people that live in this country, that have fought in past wars, and now are homeless.
