Whether students are wanting to transfer from Fresno City College to a university, earn an Associate Degree or career certificate, Fresno City College are positioned to help the students here on campus to reach their goals. Counselors not only assist students with their academic goals; they also provide guidance when it comes to personal issues that might interfere with academic success and well-being.
“My goal is to show you as many options that you’re willing to explore, whether it is help in transferring, earning a degree, to asses, show you what to do, or refer you to the appropriate sources, I am a connector,” Darlene Roach, a counselor, said.
The counseling career center is located in the Student Services building, on the second floor. There counselors can help students make an academic plan and execute it.
Counselor Darlene Roach had some words of wisdom for students looking to use the counseling services.
“The best time to visit the counseling services is to come in early and try to avoid the rush. A lot of students like to wait until they get their registration slips, but the best time to come is in September to plan for spring and again in February, at least once a semester,” Roach said.
The counseling services have also begun to offer counseling services online available to students from Fresno City College (FCC), Reedley College (RC), and the North Centers (Clovis, Madera, Oakhurst, and Willow International).
“I never thought too much about using a counselor, but I am glad that I decided to finally see one because it kept me from taking a lot of classes that I didn’t need. They just know all the rules and requirements better than I do,” said FCC student, Bernadette Bowers.
Frequently asked questions are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students can ask questions and address concerns online and then receive a response from a counselor within the next 48 hours. This is an alternate way for students to get answers to quick questions without having to stand and wait in a long line. Here, students can also view district policies, procedures, programs, and services. Counseling services can be accessed via the internet at http://counseling.scccd.edu.
The counseling services on campus are open from Monday-Thursday, 8:00a.m.-7:00p.m.and Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00p.m. You can call in to make appointments (559) 442-8226 to make the process of seeing a counselor quicker and a lot less painful. Walk-ins have a tendency to sit and wait for quite awhile.
