Two students from Fresno City College have recieved an honorable mention for the CCCAA Athlete of the month. They are Samantha Futrell a softball player and Stephan Cox a golf player. Futrell who is a freshman, graduated from Fresno’s Central High School. She is the Rams starting centerfielder and bats lead off. In March alone, Samantha batted a .400 which means that she hit the ball 30 out 75 times. She has proven her speed and talent by hitting four doubles and three triples Futrell has helped the Rams become the team to beat in the Central Valley Conference. Futrell has been the force that keeps the team going had helped them to gain the number four ranking in the Northern California ranking, and number eight in all of California. Currently the Rams have a 13-1 Score, which bring them close to Central Valley Conference championship for the first time since 2001. She is also a prime candidate for the CVC player of the year honors. Through the Rams season, she has 59 hits, 142 at bats, 38 runs 10 doubles, and four triples. She is truly the glue that holds the team together. The other student is Stephan Cox,z who is a native of Essex England. Cox, a sophomore, brings his great golf game which he learned and mastered on the courses which the British Isles are famous for. Cox is the leading golfer in the Central Valley Conference with a 72.00 average. His scores for March 2009are 73 at Visalia country club; 70 at Lemoore Golf Course;74 at Kings River Country Club;75 at Fig Garden Golf Club; just to name a few. In the past month, he had a stroke average of 71.67 and 73.45 for the season. Cox was also a tournament medalist five times in the month of March. With only four more matches to go, Cox is just 21 shots ahead of the next golfer and is in in the drive to be the conference’s Most Valuable Player, he also leads the talent-filled team with members who are the front runners in the conference. Cox not only brings his know-how of British courses, but a high level of enthusiasm and a pure love of the game. He has adapted well to the differences on California courses. FCC men’s gold coach Scott Stark said of him saying “This kid is tremendous, and I would like him to be recognized for the fantastic golf that he has played.” With all of his natural ability no one would be surprised to see Stephen Cox at the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
