The Fresno City College bookstore is showcasing literary works by faculty and staff. More than a dozen instructors at FCC have authored books in fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
The display features a book of poetry, This many miles from desire by Lee Herrick, an instructor of English; The Particulars of Being, a book of poetry by Michael David Roberts, Dean of Humanities; And he made a woman by Darlene Laney, a book on how to become a woman of quality in a B class world.
What Will My Mother Say, a story of a tribal African girl coming of age in America by Dr. Dympna Ugwu-Oju is also shown. So is Here, Bullet by Brian Turner, an FCC instructor who served in Iraq for a total of seven years. Dr. Sydney Harriet has two books featured in the college bookstore: A Writer’s Guide to Software Developers, Electronic Publishers, and Agents, and The Senior Golfer’s Answer Book. Carole Brody Fleet’s book Widows Wear Stilettos, Fifty by Librarian Donna Lynn Chandler are highlighted.
Laurel Doud, another librarian here at Fresno City College wrote This Body, a book she started writing six years ago when she was going through a tough time.
Doud said she had just wanted to die and start over in a thin body with money.
“What I represent is that the system does work: You can be a nobody and still get a great agent and a good publisher, Doud said. “I don’t feel like an author, not yet, anyway. I’m more comfortable saying, I’m a research librarian who’s gotten a book published.”
From the Fresno City College Math, Science, and Engineering Division, Rosemarie Bezerra-Nader, Paula Castagna, Dr. Raymond Stanton, and Carl Johansson all have published works in their field.
Karin Barnett, textbook purchasing clerk in the Fresno City College bookstore, who organized the display said, “I was in a conversation with Lee Herrick who made the suggestion to spotlight authors here on campus, so I sent out an e-mail to instructors and staff, and this is what we ended up with.” Barnett added that it is wonderful to be able to say that Fresno City College has such a gifted and talented staff of educators.
The majority of these books can be found on web sites such as Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and of course in FCC’s bookstore.
Anyone interested in obtaining these literary works should contact Karin Barnett at the bookstore. All the published literary works by FCC faculty and staff can also be specially ordered.
Students looking for great works of literature or just hoping to score some brownie points with their instructors should read and discuss these books around the authors.
On a more serious note, expand your mind, grab one of these books; and sit back, relax, and enjoy.
