Rampage Takes Home 16 Awards at state journalism conference

Editors and reporters for the Fresno City College newspaper, the Rampage, celebrate after impressive wins at the annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference in Burbank, California on March 17-19.

The Fresno City College Rampage editors and reporters won 16 awards at the annual JACC conference in Burbank,

Ten members of the student-run newspaper, along with their adviser, attended the Journalism Association of Community Colleges annual convention from March 17-19.

At the award for publications, the Rampage collected four awards for items in the “bring-in” category; these are items that were worked on during previous semesters.

Bobby Brown, illustrator for the paper, won both a third and fourth places for his work.

Patrick Forrest, a former news editor, received an honorable mention for news writing.

Caleb Owens-Garrett earned a first place award for his column writing for the pieces he wrote on transgender issues.

Throughout the conference, students competed in several categories, from writing to broadcast. Members of the Rampage competed against numerous students representing colleges throughout the state.

 

Following the on-the-spot competitions, participants, with their advisers, attended an awards banquet on March 19.

Seven of the 10 members of the Rampage who participated in competitions received awards during the ceremony, some receiving multiple awards.

Overall, the Rampage collected 16 awards in nine categories — 12 of those awards were earned in on-the-spot competitions throughout the weekend.

Ram Reyes, photographer for the Rampage, earned the most impressive win for the publication. Reyes swept the photography competitions, earning two first places in news and feature photo categories.

Rampage Editor-in-Chief, Cresencio Rodriguez-Delgado was amazed at the performances by the Rampage staff.

Rodriguez-Delgado said, “I think our staff showed much interest and ambition during the competitions and we demonstrated how hard we can work.”

Rampage adviser, Dympna Ugwu-Oju also expressed her pride in the recognition her students received during the conference.

Ugwu-Oju said, “I couldn’t be more proud of my students and how hard they have worked to improve their craft.”

Reporter and Photographer, Ram Reyes was humbled by his top wins, in which he trumped photographers from across the state.

“I exceeded all expectations, even mine,” Reyes said. “It’s good indication that I am doing something right; I am very critical of my work.”
