Mama Movie Review

Directed by  Andres Muschietti, “Mama” is Spanish-Canadian horror film, rated PG-13. Two little girls named Victoria and Lilly get into a car accident with their father in the woods.

The girls and their father go into an old cabin after the accident, then their father is killed by a dark figure in the woods. The girls end up staying at the cabin with the figure.

The movie stars Jessica Chastain (Annabel) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Lucas) as the girl’s uncle and his girlfriend. A few years later the girls are then found by Lucas and Annabel.

Victoria and Lilly seem much different than before. They are in more of a scared, paranoid state and crawl around like animals.

The dark figure (Mama) was a woman who was a patient at a mental asylum and kills a lady in the asylum for her baby before her escape. When she was in the cabin, “Mama” took care of Victoria and Lilly as her own until they were found.

This doesn’t stop “Mama” from wanting to keep the girls, which gives Annabel and Lucas an even worse situation than they had thought. “Mama” is not a human, but a part of the paranormal world as well.

The movie itself had a good storyline and plot. As the movie continues, some part are more funny than scary.

The movie did have some scary, thriller parts in it. Andres Muschietti could have made the movie much more scarier by replacing the funnier parts of the movie.

Overall, I give the movie a C- grade. It did make some people jump, but it could have been much better without the comedy included in the film.

This movie is great for you if you like the movies, The Grudge or The Ring. The ending of the movie was a disappointment to many because it didn’t make much sense at all.
