The Fresno City College women’s volleyball team (20-3) ran their win streak to 18 games and remain undefeated in conference play after a hard fought victory over College of the Sequoias (15-8) on Wednesday night.

Despite a shaky start to the match, FCC swept all three sets on Wednesday against the Giants behind a strong effort from freshman Marina Gonzalez and sophomore Keri Leake.

“It took us a little while to figure things out early,” head coach Kieran Roblee said. “COS did a nice job keeping us out of our game.”

From the start, that statement rang true, as the Rams held a lead throughout the first set, but never truly pulled away, looking bewildered at times in a match that seemed to be winnable for either side. The Rams eventually took the set 25-21.

The second set proved to be no better from the start, with the Rams and the Giants trading possessions a whopping 22 times before either team was able to open up more than a two-point lead. The team to open it up was FCC, and by the end of the set, the Rams pulled away to a final score of 25-17.

The third set opened up with a quick 2-0 lead for COS. However, after trailing 3-1, the Rams found some momentum, thanks in part to a dominating effort from sophomore Katie Emmerling and sophomore Jenna Guinn, who totaled 15 and 16 aces respectively. The Rams took a commanding 16-10 lead and never looked back, ending the night on a 9-point run on route to a 25-10 match deciding set.

FCC will face Reedley College on Friday, Oct. 26.

“It’s always fun to play the Tigers. Shannon [Jefferies] does a nice job with her teams.” Roblee said. “We’re looking forward to the battle. We know that Reedley’s gonna come in to play in a tough match.”

Reedley comes into the match at 4-14 overall, however their four victories did come in conference matchups. They are 4-9 in conference play coming into Friday’s match.

Roblee had high praise for her team, commenting that they have learned a lot this season and strengthened well as a team.

“We’re just focusing on one match at a time, ‘cause that’s all we can do. And that’s our objective right now.”
