Accident near campus damages telephone line

A traffic accident happened on Blackstone taking out a telephone pole and obstructing traffic in both lanes. The accident took place in mid-morning involving two vehicles, a ’98 Chevy 1-Ton truck and White Chevy Impala. Both driving southbound on Blackstone.

Officials originally thought it was a power line that had fallen, but when PG&E arrived it was concluded that the line in question was in fact a telephone.

“[This] Time of day, it’s not too bad, I mean, [traffic’s] not going off into dead end streets, so it’s a pretty minor inconvenience at this point,” said Fresno Police Officer Robert Cegielski, who was on scene and keeping drivers at a safe distance from the area. “Rush hour would be worst. The neighborhoods maybe congested.”

Fresno Police Department continued to redirect vehicles through E. Yale and E. Cambridge.

“We were coming down on Blackstone, to go to work” Said Clynton Webster.

Webster is the owner of the Chevy truck that knocked down the telephone pole, but believes that he was not at fault.

“[The Chevy Impala] was in the fast lane, [the car] obviously wanted to turn into the gas station and started to slow down, cut across three lanes into our slow lane. The front of [their] car was in our lane-”said Webster.

Webster and his co-worker made a quick maneuver to avoid hitting the car in front of him. He swerved onto the curb, missing the Chevy Impala.

“We didn’t even touch her car with our truck, [we] slammed into the first pole and sheared it off and we slammed into the second pole and the [phone] line landed on top of the truck,” said Webster.

Luckily, both parties in the collision were able to walk away without any injuries. Fresno PD also states no DUIs were issued. Surprisingly, Webster had a positive outlook about the whole incident stating, “It was a life experience, who else gets to close down Blackstone?”

Locals in area shouldn’t have any issues with their phone lines, as the telephone line itself wasn’t disconnected. However, traffic could be delayed for a better part of the day until AT&T technicians can resolve the situation and free up traffic.

Clynton Webster and his co-worker continued to work after contacting a family member to assist him.

“My poor baby,” said Webster “I love my truck.”
