FCC track and field athlete shot outside of her home

The 19-year-old Fresno City College student who was shot in the head in July is recovering in an outpatient rehab this week.

Paris Turner, a track and field runner for FCC, was shot on July 22 in the early morning hours, during a gathering at her house on Alluvial and Bond Avenues.

She was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Police has not charged anyone with the assault, but according to multiple reports, the assailant was not among the guests at the event and had fired a total of four shots from outside of the house.

To assist Turner’s family during her recovery, friends of Turner organized a fundraising 5-kilometer run, called “The Defeet Violence & Defend Our Community Run” on Aug.11 at Woodward Park.

Clovis West High School student Sawyer Lindsey, a former high school teammate of Turner, described her as a “role model.”

Lindsey led planning of the fundraiser which raised approximately $5,000.

“It [the Turner shooting] has been a big eye-opener, because you don’t think it happens to anyone around you … Having it happen to someone so close to us is a big thing,” said Lindsey.

Lindsey also said that many friends of Turner were “very upset” when informed of the incident. Lindsey said students at both Clovis West and FCC volunteered at the 5K event.

Although Lindsey has not talked to Turner since the shooting, she has stayed in constant communication with Clovis West head track and field coach Martin Palavicini, who visits Turner at least once every week and reports that she is walking, talking, and is not suffering from significant memory loss.

Lindsey says that Turner remembers all of her family and friends who visit her and has seen highlights of the fundraiser run and messages from her supporters.

The Turner family has not been available for comment.

According to the Fresno Police Department, the shooting is still an open investigation and investigators are following several suspect leads.

No arrests have been made.
