Fresno City College kicked off Black History Month with the theme of Black women in American culture and history. At 11 A.M. in the Old Administration Building auditorium, Interim President Tony Cantu welcomed FCC students and faculty to the opening day ceremony.
The Black national Anthem, led by FCC student Juanisha Kimble, opened the celebration. Chancellor Deborah Blue gave opening remarks and then introduced FCC’s Acappella choir directed by Professor Julie Dana. “Freedom is coming” and “Ewe thina” drums and African songs echoed through the auditorium. ”The music was very beautiful and inspiring,” said 23-year-old Taylor Davis. ”It made me feel closer to my African roots.”
State President of Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA), Mrs. Dezie Woods-Jones, was the guest speaker of the day. Woods-Jones read a poem about important Black women in history. She said, “We must never allow someone else to tell our story.”
