Transfer made easy and other news

SB 1440 Signed

Fresno City College Students with plans to transfer to a California State University received good news when Governor  Schwarzenegger signed the SB 1440. The bill, also known as the Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (STAR) will guarantee CSU admission and upper division Junior status to students who have completed 60 units of acceptable course work at a California community college.

“This simplified process will save students significant time and resources as they transfer from a community college to a CSU campus,” said Dr. Jack Scott, chancellor of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. “Chancellor Charlie Reed and I are committed to ensuring full and effective implementation of this new law by the fall of 2011, as required in this statute.”

An email address has been set up by the SCCCD to assist students with any questions they may have about the SB 1440.

Job Fair helps FCC Students

Household income fell more steeply in the Central Valley than any other city nationwide during the recession according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2009 American Community Survey.  In Fresno County the survey states household income dropped roughly by 2.9%. With incomes falling so low it can get hard to stay positive when looking for work, but Fresno City College students saw a light at the end of the recession tunnel when FCC held its annual Fall Job Fair. The job fair opened its doors at 9:00 a.m. and stayed open until around 1:00 p.m. Employers ranged from American Eagle Outfitters looking for retail help to UPS recruiting drivers, even some executive management positions were available for students.

“It’s nice that FCC holds this [job fair] and helps make it easier for students to get jobs.” said Adriana Flores, who is hoping to get a job at Radioshack, who was a vendor at the fair.
