FCC Rams are The Team To Beat

The only scary thing that was happening during Halloween was the loss that Columbia College women’s volleyball (7-8) had to endure Wednesday evening. Fresno City College (15-0) had a great turnout and put up a good game winning all 3 of their sets against the Columbia Jumpers.

The Rams celebrated the holiday by making an good effort to play Halloween music and the Volleyball team had on all black jerseys and graphic socks which added to the Halloween ambience.

Sophomore middleback and Central Valley Conference feature star Keri Leake, led the team with a total of 15 points and 13 kills, as well as Freshman pinhitter Marina Gonzalez who had 12 kills and 14 points and so far the duo together is unstoppable.

There were a few good rallies in the first set which kept Columbia College from falling far behind like previous opponents. After the first timeout the score was 10-6 Rams, Jumpers quickly lost momentum and the set ended in a Rams victory of (25-13).

The second set started off strong with multiple kills by Leake that left Columbia high and dry. There were some great digs by Sophomore libero, Mandy Campise who had 12 individual digs as well as good blocks from Gonzalez and Leake.

Columbia started to make a comeback because of outside hits from the Rams and missed balls. After the first timeout in the set the score was 17-12 Rams who then came back with 6 consecutive points, ultimately ending in another Rams victory (25-13).

Right off the bat the third set is started with another Leake kill, Columbia began to look tired and losing steam with multiple yawns from the players on the court. Over halfway through the third set there were no points on the board from the Jumpers. Freshman pinhitter Kenidi McDonald made effortless serves each time to Columbia with ease.

The little points that Columbia did make were due to simple mistakes made by the Rams between their kills and serves. The third set eventually ended with a missed serve from Columbia ending the game with a score of (25-12).

FCC had a total of 13.27 kills per set, 17.97 digs per set, and a .261 hitting percentage. The Rams are the team to beat in the CVC, their next game will be away at  6 p.m. in Merced on Friday Nov. 2.
