Status of Clubs and Organizations at FCC

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic keeping students off campus, Fresno City College still has a number of clubs and organizations available for students to join.

Student Activities released the current list of active clubs for the semester on Oct. 5.

A virtual club rush, which is normally held on campus, was hosted earlier in the semester in order to recruit prospective club members, but it’s not too late to join.

Before the start of each semester, FCC clubs submit paperwork to Student Activities in order to be recognized as an official club and this semester approximately 20 clubs are open to join.

Since campus is closed, many clubs are only using virtual platforms like Zoom to host meetings and events. These clubs are finding a way to stay active as they hold virtual events.

“As student clubs are autonomous, each club will determine how active they will be. Some will organize virtual events and promote to other students and the community, while other clubs may use their Zoom club meetings to host member events,” said Senior Program Specialist of Student Services, Janice Wong.

There are still many activities being planned by each club and plenty of events for students to look forward to.

A virtual film viewing was held on Oct.12 for Indigenous Peoples Day by the Native American Inter-Tribal Student Association and the Child Development Club will be partnering with the Ram Pantry around Halloween to give out goodies.

Some clubs also have activities running within their online meetings.

Wong mentioned that the Creative Writing Club conducts various writing activities and workshops for their members.

While there are questions about how much the clubs around campus can do through online meetings and events, “Student Activities will host a number of events for clubs, including training sessions and orientations to assist them in operating a successful and thriving organization,” Wong said.

Students interested in starting a club can also contact Student Activities.

Some of the requirements include having a faculty advisor for the organization, and a club membership roster with a list of officers.

There are also district and campus policies and guidelines that clubs must follow.

Student Activities can provide a current FCC Club List that will include the active clubs for the semester, a description of each club, club advisor email contact, and Zoom meeting times and social media sites.

Students who are interested in joining a club can reach out to the club advisor.
