On May 8, the Disabled Students Programs and Services ornamental horticulture class held their annual Mother’s Day plant sale on the northside of the language arts building at Fresno City College. They had a variety of house and vegetable plants and flowers.
Jerry Hentzler, the instructor for the ornamental horticulture class, said he has been doing plant sales at FCC for 20 years.
Money from this event goes into the DSP&S funding.
“In some ways it’s totally self-sustaining because it doesn’t come close to paying my salary. But it does go into an account that I can buy materials for the class,” said Hentzler.
Most plants for sale were set at low prices, with a few more expensive items.
“Prices of everything have gone up, and I try to keep my prices low because I know students don’t traditionally have a lot of money,” Hentzler said. “I have something as cheap as $2 house plants and as expensive as amaryllis, they’re $30.”Brianna Redondo, a FCC staff member, purchased two calla lilies.
“I bought a plant for a lady, my co-worker, as a Mother’s Day gift for her. And bought one for myself, for my desk,” Redondo said.

Redondo liked the thought of the plant sale considering he has only been on campus for four weeks.
“It’s so sweet. I mean to be able to support the people that are creating these plants and, you know, helping out there,” Redondo said. “It’s nice to see the campus and see what the campus has to offer.”
