Every athletic team has that one team that they love to beat and hate to lose to.
Fresno City College has a rich history of success in sports, but every coach has that one team that gets under their skin and there is no greater satisfaction then slaughtering them on the scoreboard. On the other hand, if your team loses to that particular team the coach probably makes the players run laps or something more horrendous.
Fresno City’s sports teams are fierce competitors, so it is hard to find a rival. I asked various head coaches at Fresno City College about which team they think is their biggest conference rival is. Here are my results:
Fresno City College participates in the Central Valley Conference which is also called the CVC; it is comprised of eight teams: Fresno City, Taft, Reedley, College of the Sequoias, West Hills, Porterville, Columbia and Merced.
Not every school has teams for every sport, for example, badminton won’t be competing in the same conference as other FCC sports; they compete in the coast conference.
I believe that rivals differ by generation. Recruiting today is built in such a way that a lot of kids from Fresno attend other schools in the CVC just to play sports.
This makes for rivalries between the student athletes as well as the schools. When you know someone on the other team you will do anything in your power to beat that team.
When I asked Eric Mendoza, the sports publicist of the CVC, he thought Fresno City’s biggest rival was the JC based in Visalia.
“I would have to say COS (College of the Sequoias) because they have more competitive teams then anyone else in the league,” Mendoza said.
COS is a very respectable arch rival. Their baseball and basketball teams are at the top in the league making them at the top of the head coaches’ poll.
Next is Reedley College and after asking Logan McKechnie, the Commissioner of the CVC, on who he thought FCC’s biggest rival was he pointed to Reedley.
“They are in the same Community College Trustee’s District, the Reedley-Fresno City squabble will never go away,” McKechnie said.
Reedley and Fresno have a long rich history of sports competition.
Reedley’s football team is probably their best sport, and they always give the Rams a battle every year. But, Reedley has no track and field team, soccer or cross country teams and it is the lack of teams that makes them fall back to our second biggest rival.
In light of everything there are always going to be those teams that you love to beat and hate to lose to.
In FCC’s case, the College of the Sequoias is the top rival of Fresno City College.
