ASG’s Third Meeting Takes a Strong Focus on the Needs of Students

The Associated Student Government (ASG) at Fresno City College aims to make sure students are heard, represented and supported on campus. ASG acts as the official voice of the student body, working alongside staff and faculty to bring change and advocate for student needs.

During the ASG meeting on Sept. 9, senators went over the changes of the ASG logo cover, club rush, fall festival and service dogs. ASG came to an agreement with a change to their Associated Student Government logo to make it stand out more. A fundraiser is set to happen during future club rushes for the ASG members as well as they want to raise money for future events or purchases. They discussed whether service dogs would have a good impact on our campus for students or not.

“I learned how to communicate with students better, being in a team, and learned how to interact with staff,” ASG President Miguel Barrita said. “It’s our job to be the voices of students.”

ASG members take this responsibility seriously. Whether it’s raising concerns, suggesting new ideas, or simply giving feedback, students know they have a group dedicated to listening.

“We have eyes and ears open to literally everything and anything they say and want,” Barrita said.

Barrita mentioned what ASG does for students here, “we want to represent them best whether that means trying to have events for them or trying to have services provided through our ASG office.”

The FCC Ram Pantry has been described as “impacting” to students here on campus as the ASG members discussed the benefits of the Ram Pantry during their meeting.

“The Ram Pantry has been very beneficial for students. It’s open, or we provide that service to students the week before finals, and we have snacks for students to get…it also helps a lot of students with studying and preparing for finals.” said ASG Vice President Reanna Carlson.

Weekly meetings are held every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., where members discuss campus issues, student initiatives, and upcoming events. These meetings are open to students who want to stay involved and connected to the decision-making process at FCC.

By serving in ASG, students not only participate in the campus community. For anyone looking to get involved, build connections, and help shape the future of FCC, ASG’s doors are open for all.
