Fresno City College student, Marc Whitmore (21) turned himself in on Jan. 10 after reportedly stabbing a classmate with a box cutter on the first day of the spring semester.

At around 9:15 a.m. on Jan. 9, Whitmore allegedly stabbed a classmate in the neck with a box cutter after class on the second floor of the Music/Speech (MS) Building.

Whitmore was spotted running from the scene shortly after the incident occurred.

The second floor was closed temporarily but resumed normal operations around 10:30 a.m.

The victim, who hasn’t been named publicly, was in stable condition when taken by ambulance.

Jerry Thurston, the teacher of the two students involved, was surprised by the ordeal.

“I’m approaching a quarter century of teaching college and this is by far the most extreme thing I have seen in my career by far.” Thurston said.

Whitmore is being charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious bodily injury.

All are felony charges.

State Center Community College District Police Chief Jose Flores was asked to comment on the situation.

“This is a place of study and education. Not a place to bring issues from outside the campus walls.” Flores said.
