Free Computer Lab in Tower District

Have you ever wanted to learn how to use the Internet by finding jobs online, finding great deals, or setting up an email account?  Or maybe you haven’t had much experience working on a computer and you just need to learn basic computer skills.  You might even just want to improve the skills you have already gained.  If these sound like skills that you would like to master there is now way in which you can do so!

Recently a non-profit Computer Training Center has opened their doors to the public. Located in Fresno at 149 N. Fulton St,  it is financially supported by the Recovery Act, the computer lab is free to all users.  (The only requirement is for users to be of the age 16 or older.)  The Recovery Act states, “While many of Recovery Act projects are focused more immediately on jumpstarting the economy, others… are expected to contribute to economic growth for many years.”

Helping others get connected online is one of their ways of helping our economy by helping people gather new computer skills that are needed in jobs around the city, state, country, and world.

Currently they have 12 computers available for use and four different classes, each with different times of being taught in both English and in Spanish by Mark Olazabal. Classes vary from basic skills to setting up e-mail accounts.

English classes take place in the mornings at 10:30 and the classes in Spanish discussing the same topic take place at 1:30 in the afternoon.  While traffic of people walking in and out during classes isn’t encouraged, people are more than able to walk-in to take the class without calling ahead.

Olazabal states, “Students are invited to attend and brush up on their computer, Internet and e-mail knowledge and skills, free of charge! Students with specific questions can attend the class that discusses the most closely-related topic.”  The lab is open Monday-Thursday from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and then from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

They also have a Facebook page where they post daily computer tips in English and Spainish.  To find the Computer Training Center on Facebook you can go to: http://www.facebook.com/GetConnectedCA.
