Rams Finish Strong

Baseball team wins conference title

Capping the regular season with a 12-game winning streak and a Central Valley Conference title, the men’s baseball team is again celebrating a championship year.

“We accomplished our goal by winning our conference and we’re playing our best baseball heading into playoffs,” head coach Ron Scott said. “Our pitching and defense is great and we’ve been scoring a lot of runs.”

Baseball Team Advances in Playoffs

The baseball team swept two playoff games from West Valley on May 7-8 to advance to the NorCal super regional, which is scheduled to start May 14.

According to news reports, Dave Rohm led FCC with a home run and 4 RBI in the Rams’ 11-8 victory over West Valley in game two. FCC defeated West Valley 9-6 in game one.

Golf team to defend its state title

The defending state champion men’s golf team is ready to try and repeat. The team finished second in the Central Valley Conference and is amped to hit the green for the playoffs.

First-time head coach Jenine Paniccia will take six of her top players – Tom Richardson, Patrick Bell, Jack Mulroy, Todd Sakamoto, Kris Kennel and Mike Dwyer –down south to the Butte Creek Country Club in Chico, Calif., for the regionals on May 9-10.

Men’s tennis wins in Ojai, loses at regionals

The men’s tennis team ended its 2010 season with a triple threat.

Freshman Kirill Sinitsyn, a Canada native, made history for the Rams as he won the Ojai Valley Tournament, one of the largest tournaments in the United States, according to head coach Steve Loop. Sinitsyn is the first FCC player to win it.

Teammates John Karlman and Taavi Himmist finished second in the doubles competition at the Ojai tournament. “We’re disappointed that we lost, but at the same time our opponents played amazing tennis,” Himmist said.

Despite losing in the NorCal finals, coach Loop praised his players. “I’m still proud of my team and all the hard work they’ve put in this year,” Loop said.

Reed Leads Softball Team Honors

The softball team finished its season with an overall record of 29-11. After finishing second in the Central Valley Conference with a league record of 14-4, the team ended its season with a loss in the NorCal playoffs.

Head coach Rhonda Williams said pitcher and third baseman Nicole Reed was her standout player, with a pitching record of 20-6. “This tied her for the most wins by a pitcher in the history of softball at FCC,” Williams said. “She has the best winning percentage by any pitcher ever at FCC.”

Reed was named first-team all-conference, first-team all-NorCal and first-team All-American, according to Williams.

Williams said center fielder Samantha Futrell made the all-conference first team for the second year in a row. Third baseman and catcher Kim Fisher lead the team in both home runs and RBI, making the all-conference first-team. And catcher Ashlynn Marino also was named first-team all-conference.

Badminton Keeps Eye on State

Head coach Carol Kadingo said the badminton team has high hopes for the final weeks of the season.

As of May 7, the team’s record stood at 4-4. Coach Kadingo said she hoped to qualify several players to compete in both singles and doubles at the upcoming State Championship tournament, which will be held May 14-15.

Women’s Tennis Places Third

The women’s tennis team, consisting of six players, took third in conference this season. Head coach Angela Minova said, “We made it as far as the NorCal singles championship, which would have qualified us to play in the State Championship. We lost the first round. However, it was a great experience for our girls.”

Minova said the top players this season included Katherine McFeeters, Kate Abston, Andrea Pereyra and Ashley Cross.
