Phones are ringing, and volunteers are canvassing. Millions of people across the country are already casting their votes for the Nov. 6 midterm elections, but there’s still time to register and vote.

California has made significant progress in voter accessibility by providing free postage stamps for mail-in (absentee) ballots, offering online registration, pre-registering nearly 1 million teens, and limiting voter requirements.

If you’re 18 years or older, a U.S. citizen and California resident, not in prison or on parole, and registered, all by election day, you’re eligible to vote.

There are almost 40 million people in California and 19 million are currently registered to vote – a record high – according to California Secretary of State Alex Padilla’s 2018 Report of Registration.

The days left to surpass that 19 million before the election are limited, but here’s everything you need to know on how to register and ensure your voice is heard.

The registration deadline is Oct. 22 and you can register at:

In case you miss the deadline, you can receive a Conditional Voter Registration at:

  • Your County Elections Office any day after Oct. 22, including the Nov. 6 election day

To register you will need:

  • A valid driver’s license/ID and social security number
  • An address to assign you to city council, congressional and state legislative districts

Election day is Nov. 6 and you can vote by:

  • Mailing in an absentee ballot
  • Voting on or before Nov. 6 at your elections office
  • Going to your polling place which you can find on www.sos.ca.gov or by calling (800) 345-VOTE (8683)
  • Voting provisionally at any other designated polling place

The offices of the Secretary of State and County Elections will have the location of your polling place. If transportation is an issue, ride-sharing apps will be offering discounted and free rides to polling places.
