Trendy Thrift Stores in Fresno

Ever hear the saying, “someone’s trash is another man’s treasure?” Well, with the recession and sluggish economy, many more people in Fresno are finding treasure in other people’s castoffs.

It can be hard to find the right thrift shop because some do not have a vast inventory or quality products.  Below is a list of the best thrift stores in Fresno.

Several thrifts stores help the community in different ways. The top three are Goodwill, the Salvation Army and Am-Vets. Out of the three, the best is Goodwill. The prices are very reasonable and the store is always neat and has everything from clothes to books to new unused items, all at very cheap prices; cheap is the key word here. They have shirts for $3. How much cheaper can it get? You could even sign up for a card that rewards you with a $5 discount at your tenth visit. That’s a free dress right there.

A very trendy and hip thrift store is Yoshi Now. The store is very well located in downtown Fresno near several art galleries and is very much involved in helping the music community. The store sells merchandise such as shirts and CDs from local musicians and keeps nothing from the profits. It has vintage merchandise like dresses and shoes and even bicycles. Their things are very reasonably priced considering it is a privately owned thrift store. You can’t miss this thrift with its eye catching exterior. On Tuesdays everything is 50 percent off, so make sure to stop by on a Tuesday.

Then there is the Neighborhood Thrift located in the Tower District. The store has a vast amount of inventory, from clothes to electronics, to furniture. You’ll be sure to find something worth buying here and at a good price. They receive donations from the community as well as from the Well Church. It features a 50 cents clothes rack, and once every two months, a $7 bag sale for clothing. Their clothes appeal to everyone, young or old and the store does not charge sales tax.

Neighborhood Thrift’s inventory and great prices are not the only things that are intriguing.  It is like no other thrift store located in Fresno. It is a non-profit organization that does several things to benefit the community, like offering employees and volunteers on the job retail experience as well as training classes on things such as writing a resume, improving interview skills and math skills. The store also donates items to the Susan B. Anthony community for to families in need.

The café inside the Neighborhood Thrift has free WIFI which is perfect for FCC students who can relax there after class or do their homework. The setting is cozy with comfortable booths.

Neighborhood Thrift also helps the local art and music community. There is a stage set up in the café area of the store where performers showcase their talent during  open mic night.

Bryan Feil, a graduate of Fresno Pacific University, is one of the three founders of Neighborhood Thrift. He said they chose to open a business of this sort, “because there was a need to be met in the community.” Feil said it was a simple choice. The start-up costs were low plus they wanted to make a positive impact on the community.

Neighborhood Thrift opened its doors in 2008 but moved to the larger location where they are now in 2009. They expanded quickly; “We were at the point where we were keeping things in our friends’ garages because we couldn’t hold it in our old location,” said Feil. On Oct. 2, they celebrated their one-year anniversary by holding a big sale.

The store is also striving to make its community more united and to improve the lives of individuals by providing work experience to them in these hard times.
