Fresno’s Tower District is home to numerous decades-old businesses. Among these is the Grandmarie’s, the notorious chicken pie shop.

Located across from the Tower Theater in the heart of the Tower District, the restaurant has served breakfast, lunch, dinner and baked goods to locals for over 50 years.

Breakfast dishes include classics such as chicken fried steak and eggs, apple, peach or strawberry sweet cakes, cinnamon and raisin French toast and Denver completes.

Lunch and dinner entrees include pot roast, honey ham steak, hamburgers, sandwiches and salads.

Homemade desserts include cream pies, fresh fruit pies, ice cream and apple crisp.

If you’re feeling ambitious, you can dare to try the fried chicken liver and eggs.

Sides are fairly inexpensive while entrée and À la carte selections range between $6 and $9.

Their signature chicken pot pies are prepared and baked daily in their massive oven.

The dinner entrée includes two buttermilk biscuits, whipped potatoes, vegetables and cole slaw.

The appearance of the entrée was acceptable, presenting a good collection of American favorites.

The chicken pie itself was uniquely delicious. The bakers use flour liberally with the buttery crust to give the final product a slight hint of raw dough flavor to compliment the chicken and gravy’s texture and flavor.

Much of the atmosphere within the shop is maintained to add a classic diner component.

Three eight foot tall roosters hang from the walls, booth cushions are vibrantly colored lime and dark green and oldies music tied together the theme.

For good measure, two chefs bantered back and forth about the 49ers and Raiders.

The feel is unique to the location, the quality of the food is excellent and their filling entrees are competitively priced.

The Chicken Pie Shop is a reflection of Americana on a plate.

The restaurant is located at 861 E. Olive Ave. and is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
