Student indecency: How it affects our community and our name

Many of us students enjoy the simplicity of a fast food meal to relax after a class, but what happens when we can’t relax because other students are being disruptive?

That was my eventful Monday evening. I was enjoying a frosty while reviewing an assignment when a few of our fellow Fresno City College students decided to play around at the nearby Wendy’s restaurant.

Not only were they loud and using profanity, but they were also having a food fight at their table. Many customers were raising their eyebrows as they saw a few french fries fly up in the air. One of the customers actually got his food and walked out of the restaurant.

I tried to continue my meal, noticing other students shaking their heads, while these indecent students who didn’t want to be identified began to get physical. They were playing around at their table when one student took it a little too far by throwing his hat in the air and also hitting another student who was enjoying their meal.

“Can you guys please stop!” said FCC student Iolani Florentino, 23.

Silence took over the restaurant while employees and customers nodded their heads while she told the fellow disruptive students off.

“If that hat would have landed in my food, you guys will have to buy me an entire new meal. You guys need to have some respect,  act like adults,” she continued as she faced them while serving ranch dressing on her caesar salad.

“I was very displeased with the situation because I was not able to enjoy my meal,” said FCC spanish major Reynaldo Vazquez, 20. “I was embarrassed of the fellow students because their behavior represented the rest of the student population that was present,”  Vazquez continued while he shook his head.

These students were not only disrespecting the facility but also elders who were present.

Geraldine Stanton, 88, was actually enjoying her meal when the group of students decided to disrespect the facility with their behavior. She noticed how the students were getting loud and out of control while she tried to enjoy her meal.

“I didn’t say anything because some of those kids don’t respect elders anymore; they wouldn’t even respect the fact that I was a few tables away.”

“Sometimes the students do get out of hand,”  said Byron Flores, the Wendy’s manager on duty at the time.

Not only did the students’ behavior affect the way they represent our college but also our community. A few customers didn’t want to speak up because they figured they were also going to get disrespected.

It’s embarrassing to have our fellow students represent us in such an embarrassing way. As in many other situations, some will stay quiet and others will speak up. Regardless of the circumstances, we have to remember we represent the same community, Fresno City College, and we need to maintain respect.
