ASG Gets Green Light for Trustee Election

March 10, 2017

After two semesters of informal representation, Fresno City College will finally have a special election for student trustee.

The Associated Student Government held a vote whether or not to have a special election, during their weekly meeting on March 28.

The vote was 8-6 in favor of holding the special election.

Brandon McLaughlin, ASG vice president, said that Paul Parnell, chancellor of the State Center Community College District, had approved the election on Feb. 26 after learning about the vacant position. The election date will be announced in coming weeks.

“The Chancellor had told President Goldsmith, along with our adviser, that we are allowed to hold our election for trustee,” McLaughlin said. ”After running through all the procedures, the special election should take place in the next three or four weeks.”

Appointed trustee Kaura Lopez said she was interested in running in the special election, “but it’s open for anyone who also may want to run.”

The current requirements to run are a 2.0 GPA and enrolment in at least least six units.

McLaughlin attributed the narrow margin of victory in the ASG vote for the special election resulted from miscommunication.

“I did not fully explain the situation,” McLaughlin said, adding that some members of the ASG were just appointed and were not fully aware what they were voting on.

“There was a lot of back room talking in the organization,” he said. “I don’t think I brought that information out to them enough.”
Reedley college elected Ernesto Duran as a student  trustee to represent both FCC and Reedley college until the special election is completed.
